Whitefish Bay High School does an exceptional job of getting their students to a college ready level in for years. They produce informal videos and have online forum discussions addressing: What environments, people, or experiences have helped them succeed? Which ones have stood in your way? What motivates you (and does not motivate you) to attend school and learn? We've selected the following three videos in which students describe CHS in this context. When teachers make all the decisions, they create a very different kind of schoolĬHS students are working with Students Speak Out, Milwaukee to talk about school/ing in Milwaukee Public Schools. They determine the learning program, make financial decisions, and set the culture of the school including a high level of collaboration among teachers and students. Roxane carries out the decisions-made by all the teacher-members of the CHS "coop". As lead teacher, she is able to remain in the classroom to teach and also take care of necessary administrative duties. Roxane is co-lead teacher, with Jason O'Brien, at CHS. Roxane is also an active professional visual artist and performance artist in the community. CHS Cooperative does this via investigation, imagination and hands-on design activities. As an educator, she emphasizes the need to integrate art and creative problem-solving throughout the curriculum. In addition to teaching in the classroom, Roxane serves two other roles: co-Lead Teacher and Special Education Administrator. She is a founding member of Community High School "Cooperative" and the school it serves. Each student chooses an internship in a field that they are interested in learning about, and commit to this on-the-job learning one day per week. A strong service-learning component sets CHS apart from other conventional programs. ![]() Mother Caroline Campus – Coed Primary and Boys Middle Schools – 1425 S.At Community High School, an instrumentality chartered school of the Milwaukee Public Schools, the teacher "cooperative" members have elected to offer a conventional learning program with a social justice emphasis to engage its students as they become strong, active citizens. Today, NDSM operates as one school with two campuses and three programs serving more than 640 students: the Blessed Theresa Campus houses the girls middle school, while our Mother Caroline Campus is home to the coed primary and boys middle schools.īlessed Theresa Campus – Girls Middle School – 1420 W. Most recently, in fall 2021, NDSM welcomed its first class of three-year-old kindergarten students. In response to calls from NDSM parents to provide a pathway for their boys, the school opened a boys middle school in 2018, preserving the institution’s single-gender model for young adolescents. The primary and middle schools now operate as Notre Dame School of Milwaukee. With the addition of the primary school a new name was branded in 2014 to encompass the whole K4 – 8 school community. Milwaukees future by ensuring every child has the opportunity to attend a high-quality school. ![]() In August 2012, Notre Dame Primary School opened. We are launching a new effort to move Milwaukee forward. After 17 years of proven academic achievement, a strategic plan was implemented to extend the school’s reach into the lower grades in order to prepare the incoming fifth graders for the rigorous academic work expected of them. ![]() The school began with 26 Latina students and is now an all girls 5th -8th program. Their vision was to fill the education void in the rapidly growing, low-income, Hispanic neighborhood on Milwaukee’s near south side. Notre Dame Middle School was founded in 1996 by the School Sisters of Notre Dame with the help of PAVE and a group of Milwaukee-area business executives.
